How To Start Giving

As rightly said by Helen Keller “alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”, as much as changing the face of the world we are living in currently. The act of giving has been discussed and spoken about in abundance but it still is a concept kept discrete. It is the ability to give something either measured in monetary value or service-based value without demanding or expecting anything in return, a selfless act aimed towards helping the underprivileged sections of our society. Little acts of service can contribute towards a greater cause for someone, probable even save someone’s life. Your act of giving doesn’t always need to have a material aspect conjoined with itself, simple acts of kindness like being there for someone during their bad times and lending them emotional support is also an act of giving. While there are multiple ways in which you can start your journey of giving, we have curated top 5 ways in which even you can become a contributor to the smiles of millions around the world.

Charity starts at home

You must have heard this quote being used a lot when we start talking about charity, its literal meaning is to start at home by giving to your family members, friends and close ones. It implies to fulfil our duties towards the ones who have been with us through thick and thin and then slowly venture out and start helping others. Little acts of giving such as helping a friend start a business by becoming their initial investor or helping your mother start a YouTube channel are all simple yet effective acts of giving. They need not be elaborate gestures but simple yet loving acts that can or may not involve materialistic needs.

Donate

The next crucial step is to donate, start by donating old cloths, books, etc to the underprivileged or drop them off at orphanages, old – age homes etc. Things that you do not need anymore can be of great value and importance to someone so Instead of them ending up in landfills and contributing to global wastage they could end up being of use to the needy. You can thus indulge in the art of giving without even spending excess while also following the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle. Some things that you can donate to the deprived are:
• Houseware
• Electronic items
• Bedding (pillows, mattresses, comforters etc.)
• Toys
• Books and knowledge material
• Clothing
• Hardware etc.

Volunteer

Volunteering is another way in which you can participate in the act of giving. Volunteer for community programmes, orphanages, old age homes, charity runs, etc. so that you can be an effectively help the needy upfront. You make sure that the donations are going towards the right use while also helping the underprivileged to make use of those donations. It is a service based giving act where you give your time and labour for community service. You can work as a regular volunteer or as an emergency volunteer that goes to work when emergency situations such as droughts, floods, famines etc hit by making necessary aids available to those hit by the phenomenon. You can start by applying to nearby volunteer-based organisations and start devoting a little amount of your time, love and care to the cause.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Just like you give back to your community even the environment around us needs your help, love and care to grow and thrive. Start to give back not dust and pollution but sustainable methods that ensure that the environment sticks with us in the long run. Practice the 3r’s that is reduce, reuse and recycle so that less garbage ends up in landfills and ditches.
• Reduce the amount of material you consume and practice inculcating the “less is more” agenda in your daily life.
• Reuse as many things as possible around your home, if not possible donate them instead of giving them up to landfills
• Recycle materialistic things such as making curtains out of old bedsheets or reusing plastic or tin containers

Make it a goal

Practise giving as part of your routine. Save some money every month that goes to charity, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket while also fulfilling someone’s dream. Make short term goals like volunteering for a particular organisation or participating in a charity run so that even in your busy life you can dedicate some time, money, labour, love and care to the needy and the deprived. Do not allow yourself to get out of this habit of giving be it however meagre it be, remember it is better to start giving more once your financial condition improves rather than start from the bottom and start giving again.

M Yoganathan – The Conductor Turned Environmentalist

The Tree Man, also known as Marimuthu Yoganathan, is an Indian environmenal activist who worked as a bus driver before gradually developing a lifelong love of nature. M. Yoganathan battled against the timber mafia in the Nilgiris while still in school by putting handwritten signs on walls, marking the locations of treefelling with survey numbers, and pleading with law enforcement and forest officials to prosecute those responsible. He began his career as a bus conductor, but that didn’t quench his hunger for environmental activism; today, he offers free saplings to bus passengers in exchange for their tickets, and he devotes a significant amount of his salary to this cause.

He had a close relationship with Tamil Nadu Green Movement activist Jayachandran in Kotagiri, and this relationship only fueled his passion in nature preservation. In 1999, Yoganathan started working for the Tamil Nadu state transport company. Due to his frequent absences from work, he has been transferred 40 times in his 17 years of employment as a bus conductor. Nevertheless, he keeps pushing for environmental safety, and his family continues to assist him in this endeavour. According to him, almost 5,000 schools in the state replied to his request on June 5, World Environment Day, to swear an oath to preserve the environment and plant at least one tree on their campus.Despite this, not many people are familiar with him or his work. We however work our way to introduce this magnificient personality to the many people who continue to look on for inspiration.

Rajendra Singh – The Waterman Of India

Rajendra Singh is an active environmentalist hailing from Rajasthan who has been up to his environmental activism since the late 90’s. He is also known as the waterman of India for his efforts to save and preserve the water resources in and around Rajasthan not just for the state but for all of India’s benefit. While still being in school, he got himself involved in a lot of social causes like village sanitation program, alcoholism eradification program, opened up a library for the village kids, while also solving local conflicts. His active efforts continued all through his adulthood as he joined the Tarun Bharat Sangh through sustainable development initiatives, Tarun Bharat Sangh attempts to improve the lives of an impoverished segment of the population. Soon after he reorganised the whole organisation into a more effective movement that focused majorly on environmental issue around India.

He was tormented by the inability of his superiors to do anything to save the environment or save Rajasthan as it faced severe drought all around the year. He finally left his job, sold all of his household belongings and moved to Thanagazi tehsil in Alwar district, where he encountered the severe water problem that the villagers faced. It was so severe that it came to be known as the “dark zone”. He focused on rebuilding johads (traditional check dams) instead of exploitative bore wells that further gave rise to water scarcity. Within 3 years this barren landscape was transformed into one of Rajasthan’s most luscious and green fields. In the years that followed, TBS expanded and constructed 4,500 johads in 850 villages across 11 districts in Rajasthan. Rajendra Singh won the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, and Stockholm Water Prize. He was also instrumental in stopping the contentious Loharinag Pala Hydro Power Project. His dedication has inspired many upcoming environmentalists to take up the flag themselves and work towards environmentalist protection and preservation.

Basanti Devi – The Environmentalist Behind Saving The Kosi River

Basanti Devi is an Indian environmentalist who is attributed to be the mind and hand behind saving the Kosi River in Uttarakhand. Her life had been a tough testament to her struggles, she was married off to an older man when she was just 12, and within two years of her marriage, her husband died as she was sent off to live in an ashram for girls. At the mere age of 14, she started living at the Kausani ashram that was founded by Sarla Behn. She also started pursuing her studies and looking after children and women in the facility. Basanti Devi now 64 says that Kausani ashram changed her life for the better and inspired her to do social service and take up the issue of saving the Kosi River and working dedicatedly towards it. She received the Padma shri and the Nari Shakti award both of which were the highest honours. Devi Ji is now looked at as a champion crusader for both women’s empowerment and environmental protection.

She was initially tasked with opening Bal Baris that were active centres of recreation for children and young adults. She started opening them in remote villages that also took care of the children’s education and nutrition. Devi read an article on how the Kosi River (the most important water resource for Uttarakhand) may cease to exist in a few decades due to the rapid felling of trees by local women. These local women were from poor households who had no access to any other source of firewood so Devi ji encouraged them to not cut trees but use the dry ones for fuel and firewood. She organised them into small groups that were aimed to save the Kosi River, this helped both empower women as well as save the environment. She also protested and fought against the forest department for cutting big trees. Although the results have taken time to manifest, springs that used to dry up in the summer are now active all year. Additionally, the forest exhibits greater diversity thanks to the appearance of more broad-leaved trees including oak, rhododendron, and myrica esculenta species.

India’s Cattle Struggles With The Lumpy Skin Disease

Lumpy skin disease is a new virus that has been seen as a recurrent phenomenon in cattle. Symptoms occur one week after the infection some of its signs include fever, reduced milk production, loss of appetite, water discharge from the eyes and nose, and prominent blisters that can be seen forming on the skin. While the majority of the cases have been noted to be spotted in cattle, some other animals such as giraffes, water buffalos, impalas, etc. Even when animals are getting infected on such a wild scale, people are least concerned as many don’t even know about this terrible disease that is on the loose. Impaac foundation takes the initiative to warn and inform the common people about this disease so that they can identify the disease at an earlier stage and make better-informed decisions about the same.

However, the lumpy skin disease is not a recent phenomenon as we can see its earlier traces in 19th century Africa for more than 5 years of prolonged disease and death. It spread widely in Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Republic of South Africa, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Somalia, and Cameroon and affected more than 8 million cattle, and caused heavy economic loss across the continent. Many cattle and sheep were slaughtered so that the infection would not spread throughout the world, however, it came back in 2022 in some parts of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to create havoc across lands.

It has already affected many and continues to hamper others on its way to destruction and chaos. How many more animals are we willing to sacrifice for our higher authorities and scientists to take charge and find a permanent solution that eliminates this virus from the face of the earth? It’s high time we take charge and globally work towards finding a solution that protects these gentle beings from suffering anymore.
