Rajendra Singh – The Waterman Of India

Rajendra Singh is an active environmentalist hailing from Rajasthan who has been up to his environmental activism since the late 90’s. He is also known as the waterman of India for his efforts to save and preserve the water resources in and around Rajasthan not just for the state but for all of India’s benefit. While still being in school, he got himself involved in a lot of social causes like village sanitation program, alcoholism eradification program, opened up a library for the village kids, while also solving local conflicts. His active efforts continued all through his adulthood as he joined the Tarun Bharat Sangh through sustainable development initiatives, Tarun Bharat Sangh attempts to improve the lives of an impoverished segment of the population. Soon after he reorganised the whole organisation into a more effective movement that focused majorly on environmental issue around India.

He was tormented by the inability of his superiors to do anything to save the environment or save Rajasthan as it faced severe drought all around the year. He finally left his job, sold all of his household belongings and moved to Thanagazi tehsil in Alwar district, where he encountered the severe water problem that the villagers faced. It was so severe that it came to be known as the “dark zone”. He focused on rebuilding johads (traditional check dams) instead of exploitative bore wells that further gave rise to water scarcity. Within 3 years this barren landscape was transformed into one of Rajasthan’s most luscious and green fields. In the years that followed, TBS expanded and constructed 4,500 johads in 850 villages across 11 districts in Rajasthan. Rajendra Singh won the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, and Stockholm Water Prize. He was also instrumental in stopping the contentious Loharinag Pala Hydro Power Project. His dedication has inspired many upcoming environmentalists to take up the flag themselves and work towards environmentalist protection and preservation.

Basanti Devi – The Environmentalist Behind Saving The Kosi River

Basanti Devi is an Indian environmentalist who is attributed to be the mind and hand behind saving the Kosi River in Uttarakhand. Her life had been a tough testament to her struggles, she was married off to an older man when she was just 12, and within two years of her marriage, her husband died as she was sent off to live in an ashram for girls. At the mere age of 14, she started living at the Kausani ashram that was founded by Sarla Behn. She also started pursuing her studies and looking after children and women in the facility. Basanti Devi now 64 says that Kausani ashram changed her life for the better and inspired her to do social service and take up the issue of saving the Kosi River and working dedicatedly towards it. She received the Padma shri and the Nari Shakti award both of which were the highest honours. Devi Ji is now looked at as a champion crusader for both women’s empowerment and environmental protection.

She was initially tasked with opening Bal Baris that were active centres of recreation for children and young adults. She started opening them in remote villages that also took care of the children’s education and nutrition. Devi read an article on how the Kosi River (the most important water resource for Uttarakhand) may cease to exist in a few decades due to the rapid felling of trees by local women. These local women were from poor households who had no access to any other source of firewood so Devi ji encouraged them to not cut trees but use the dry ones for fuel and firewood. She organised them into small groups that were aimed to save the Kosi River, this helped both empower women as well as save the environment. She also protested and fought against the forest department for cutting big trees. Although the results have taken time to manifest, springs that used to dry up in the summer are now active all year. Additionally, the forest exhibits greater diversity thanks to the appearance of more broad-leaved trees including oak, rhododendron, and myrica esculenta species.

Wangari Maathai’s Life and Lessons

Wangari Muta Maathai was the late 19th and early 20th century Kenyan social, environmental and political activist who was influential in bringing about a great change in Kenya’s environmental and political advances. She was the first African woman to receive a doctorate in veterinary anatomy from the University of Nairobi where she further went on to teach that very subject. She served in the National Council of Women as an active member originally and then went on to become it’s chairman wherein she advocated the idea of planting trees and make it a grassroot effort from people so that they can sustain both their livelihoods as well as the environment.

When local Kenyan women complained of how the streams were drying up, how they had to walk long distances to collect firewood and how the food supply was less, Wangari Maathai decided to introduce the green belt movement, she motivated the local women to plant seedlings so that their need for food, firewood, rainwater harvesting were met. The green belt movement that began as part of a small initiative was now a part of something much greater. Campaigns and seminars were held around Africa about this movement as it campaigned for the need for individuals to fight and survive for their political, environmental and economic circumstances. They began demanding for more democratic space as well as fought against land grabbing and the encroachment of agriculture into forest lands.

Her work was widely recognised after she was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her conservation and protection efforts. The green belt movement became to be known around the world as it showed how grassroot level ideas from a singe person can bring the whole community together for the greater good of the society. She published books that advocated the notion further, such as The Green Belt Movement, Unbowed, The Challenge for Africa, and Replenishing the Earth. She was also appointed as the goodwill ambassador for the Congo Basin Forest Ecosystem also known as the World’s second lung after the Amazon rainforest.

The Story Of The Courageous Lady – Kinkri Devi

Kinkri Devi was a courageous lady who dared to raise her voice against illegal mining and quarrying in her native state of Himachal Pradesh during the late 1900’s and 2000’s. She never knew how to read or write but was active and instrumental in bringing about a change in society. She filed a lawsuit against 48 mine owners who were recklessly drilling away on the hills in pursuit of money not caring about the harmful consequences that it caused. The Supreme Court did not pay heed to the matter at first but later after Devi ji went on a hunger strike for 19 days her appeal was finally accepted in court. In 1947, the court finally issued a blanket ban on mining as her story began to be known widely around the world.

She lighted the lamp and spoke passionately about the need to conserve natural resources and how even ordinary people like her can make a greater and deeper impact in the society. A US based charity organisation identified her need for decent living conditions after reading an article about her and her struggles. Although mining operations continued on those hills but at a much more decreased level and proper precautions were taken to ensure that no harm occurred.

Let’s Celebrate Diwali The Old-Fashioned Way

Diwali has always been the festival of lights, happiness and celebrating the good over evil, but is it fair that we become evil in our mad pursuit to celebrate it in the grandest way possible? Every year air pollution increases by a considerable amount during and after Diwali due to the incessant overuse of firecrackers. Its not just the environment that we harm we also harm those around and near us like children, old people, animals etc. these can cause an everlasting effect and can also permanently damage their body and render them insufficient to do things on their own. However, youngsters, Ngo’s and even families have started taking the initiative to not burst firecrackers or indulge in activities harmful to self and others. This has come about with a lot of protests, awareness campaigns, and years of trying to change the system for a better tomorrow.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-diwali-celebration-family-firecrackers-animals-sufferring-environment-sustainable-pros-cons

Diwali brings with itself happiness and prosperity for all but is it fair if we harm and not care about the happiness and prosperity of those around us? Firecrackers contain harmful chemicals like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides that are responsible for global warming and the constant climate change in the environment. Some ruthless citizens also try to harm animals by putting or tying firecrackers to their body parts resulting in grave harm or sometimes even death. The festival also brings with it a lot of waste going to landslides due to the need and purchase of new things or materials. Fast fashion industries are also benefitted due to the consumer’s need for the latest trends in the market, all of these significantly contribute in the need to address this grave issue in front of us.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-diwali-celebration-family-firecrackers-animals-sufferring-environment-sustainable-pros-cons

So this Diwali let’s celebrate it the eco-friendly and old-fashioned way:
• Switch out new clothes for the old and beautiful sarees in your mom’s wardrobe
• Do not burst firecrackers or minimise their usage
• Whenever you go out to buy something make sure to carry your own container or cloth bags
• Instead of using candles or heavy lanterns use earthen oil diyas to light up your homes and offices
• Instead of using powdered rangoli and heavy on paper and plastic decoratives, use natural flowers to decorate your house
• Reduce, reuse and recycle
• Gift handmades to your guests instead of store brought items

Miyawaki Plantation Method

What Is The Miyawaki Method ?

Miyawaki is a technique developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, it essentially refers to growing tightly knit forests in a very short duration of time by planting the saplings close to each other that ensures fast plant growth and even makes them self-sustainable in a few years. This method is applied as normal forest growth takes anywhere between 200 – 300 years while the Miyawaki forests grow just within a short span of 20 – 30 years. Akira Miyawaki conducted diligent research and came up with a method that helped with the problem of diminishing plant and forest growth. This method was instrumental in increasing the forest cover in Japan as it slowly expands its roots to India and other countries.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Sustainable-Miyawaki-AkiraMiyawaki-animals-plants-afforestation-deforestation-environement

How Does It Work ?

The site of a future forest is firstly analysed and determined if a forest can be cultivated upon it, different plant species are then planted in a random order as you would generally find in a forest and then taken care of till 2 – 3 years by monitoring, watering and weeding them, until they become self – sustainable and capable enough to thrive on their own without the interference of anything or anyone. The seeds are planted in close accordance with one another so that they leave little to no space between themselves helping them to grow better and faster. These plants compete for space, water, nutrients, sunlight etc, this makes their growth about 10 times faster and they tend to become more adaptable in the natural scenario. This method has already been implemented in Japan, southeast Asia, India, Brazil etc. leading to a spectaculous growth of more than 4000+ Miyawaki forests.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Sustainable-Miyawaki-AkiraMiyawaki-animals-plants-afforestation-deforestation-environement

How Will It Help Us ?

This method has been acting as a boon for the likes and interests of mother earth, the forest cover is slowly increasing and flourishing all within a very small duration leading to a clean and green earth for our future generation. While there are many advantages of the Miyawaki plantation style a few of them have been listed below:
• It utilises less space thus not interrupting any other development happening in its surroundings.
• It creates carbon sinks implying that the carbon present in nature is absorbed by these plants making it a less polluted environment.
• The plant growth is much faster than any normal plantation method leading to results in just a few years, something that would have taken approximate 200 – 300 years.
• Such dense forests attract more biodiversity onto the land
• It is also self – sustainable

Top 5 Things To Consider Before Bringing A Pet Home

Bringing home a dog is like bringing home a kid, it is exhilarating, confusing, exhausting but at the same time exciting. There are a lot of things that one has to keep in mind before adopting a dog as it is a huge responsibility to train, groom and make the pet one’s family member. Just like a kid, a dog is totally new to its surroundings and the people around causing it to be freaked out but with proper care and effort, it is totally possible to make the dog comfortable in the house. It is essential that we respect a dog’s personal space as well, it is not uncommon for a rescued dog to stay aloof and be in their own space but that doesn’t mean that the dog does not like you, its earlier situation has made it to be this way, all they need is love and care as they will soon come wagging their tail towards you.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-dog-adopt-help-save-donate

Veterinary advice

Before adopting or buying a dog, it is necessary to seek veterinary advice on what kind of dog would suit your lifestyle and housing facilities. Greyhounds for example need a companion dog to thrive while some are totally independent and do not need a partner dog, some can adjust in cramped spaces while some need a good walking around space so depending on your condition, the vet will suggest you a dog that can fit into your current surroundings. The vet will tell you about your pet’s diet, schedule, allergy warnings etc. which will additionally help your pet to adjust better in the new lifestyle.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-dog-adopt-help-save-donate

Time and effort

One of the most crucial things to consider before adopting a dog is that the pet requires your time and effort for its proper upbringing. Once you adopt a pet your responsibilities will only increase as you need to make it aware of its surroundings, make sure he\she eats well, play with your dog, take him out on walks, try not to leave it alone without any company etc. If all the family members are working and there is no one to take care of the dog it is best to not adopt one and not risk its life. A dog will be very confused once you bring it home, he might howl at night, frequently urinate everywhere, chew on things lying around the house etc. at times like these it is important to keep your cool and treat like how you would treat your child. Proper care, time and effort invested in the dog will transform him into a well-groomed pet very soon.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-dog-adopt-help-save-donate

Dog safe space

Your home should be properly prepped so that your pet doesn’t get hurt while running or playing around in the house. Sharp things like scissors, knives etc should be kept out of reach of dogs, open wires are a big hazard so properly insulate everything and keep them out of your pet’s paws to reduce the risk of him getting electrocuted or tripping on the wires. Keep all medications and food items locked up in cabinets to ensure that your dog doesn’t get access to them. Before bringing home your dog, evaluate your living space and figure out the potential dangers in your space and fix them up so that your pet can roam freely around.

Stocking supplies

You should adequately stock your house with pet necessities to not cause any rush last minute and so that you can properly take care of the little munchkin. Food, medicines, proper clothes according to the weather, a little bed, toys to keep him entertained, treats etc. are a must before bringing your dog home. All of his necessities should be well taken care of to ensure his peaceful and comfortable stay.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-dog-adopt-help-save-donate

Commitment

If you are planning to adopt a dog, it should be a full-fledged commitment to love and cherish him/her for the rest of their lives. It should be well planned if you want to adopt a dog and you need to ask yourself questions like am I capable enough to sustain another living being’s life? Will I be able to provide it with the love, time and effort required? And if the answers to these questions are a yes you should think about adopting a dog as a pet. If you suddenly decide to abandon the pet and leave out in the outside world it will not be able to sustain itself due to the harsh conditions. Many die of road accidents or starvation when abandoned. Therefore, adopting should be a well thought after decision.

Now if you are fully prepared to adopt a dog, go ahead and give it the life it deserves.

Russia’s Invasion On Ukraine

Ukraine is struggling to survive amidst the deadly war effects, Impaac brings to you a detailed breakdown and analysis on all that unfolded in Ukraine.

Russian troops have entered Ukraine as many people have died and millions have been displaced. It is said to be the worst war in history after World War 2. Putin launched a full-fledged invasion on Ukraine on February 2022, he ordered attacks be carried out in major parts of the country mainly Kyiv – the capital of Ukraine. Vladimir Putin calls this inhumane attack a “special military operation” that would unite Russia and Ukraine. He is constantly trying to justify his attacks by saying that he does not want to kill civilians but only wishes to regain the reigns of Ukraine.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-fundraising-Ukraine-help-support-Russia-Invasion

What really happened?

After much struggle, deaths and protests Ukraine had finally gained independence from the Soviet Union on 24 August 1991, when Ukraine proclaimed independence from the Soviet union. However Russia wants to restablish its base in Ukraine and hence has launched a full blown invasion on Ukraine as ordered by Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. On a fine morning of 24th February, millions of civilians had to leave home due to bomb alerts and take shelter in underground metro stations and bomb shelters. There is a huge influx of refugees in neibouring countries that has led Ukrainians grappling for supplies.  The city of Bucha was torn apart by Russians as almost the whole of the city was demolished and mass murders took place, Ukrainian president Zelenskyy  was in tears during his round to Bucha. Millions of people have been displaced from their homes and the death toll is high but Ukrainians still haven’t given up hopes of independence as the president continues to fight against the Russians alongside the soldiers of his country.

War’s effects on people and animals

Kyiv and Bucha are the two places hit severely by the Russian troops, Ukraine continues to fight alone with their will and motivation to not let their country go into brutal hands, and even during such trying times President Zelensky of Ukraine refuses to back down or flee the country, everyone is fighting back to stop the war at whatever cost it takes. People are dying and left with little supplies as they leave home in large numbers to evacuate to the nearest underground metro or bomb shelter. Mothers have to keep their heart strong and send their kids to other countries with total strangers. Mass destructions have been taking place all around the country causing harm to both humans and animals. Animals have been left to fend for themselves and are finding it hard to survive in such harsh conditions. The atmosphere is full of pollution, dust and debris making it hard for people and animals to breathe openly in this environment. However there are still people like Zelenskyy(ukraine’s president) who gave a dog a medal of appreciation for his ability to sniff out bombs.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-fundraising-Ukraine-help-support-Russia-Invasion

Rising opposition from other countries

Vladimir Putin is facing harsh opposition from other countries as well as his own for his decision to attack Ukraine and planning to take over the country. World leaders have voiced out their opinions against Putin and are helping Ukraine by backing them with weapons, and resources for the war. Many countries have opened their borders for Ukrainian refugees and have helped them with housing facilities until the war is over. Millitary aid and other necessities are being shipped to Ukraine after appeals from the country’s president Zelenskyy.
