Rajendra Singh – The Waterman Of India

Rajendra Singh is an active environmentalist hailing from Rajasthan who has been up to his environmental activism since the late 90’s. He is also known as the waterman of India for his efforts to save and preserve the water resources in and around Rajasthan not just for the state but for all of India’s benefit. While still being in school, he got himself involved in a lot of social causes like village sanitation program, alcoholism eradification program, opened up a library for the village kids, while also solving local conflicts. His active efforts continued all through his adulthood as he joined the Tarun Bharat Sangh through sustainable development initiatives, Tarun Bharat Sangh attempts to improve the lives of an impoverished segment of the population. Soon after he reorganised the whole organisation into a more effective movement that focused majorly on environmental issue around India.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-MYoganathan-RajendraSingh-environmnetalist-environment-save-help-protect-saplings-plants-waterman-drought-Rajasthan-Alwar

He was tormented by the inability of his superiors to do anything to save the environment or save Rajasthan as it faced severe drought all around the year. He finally left his job, sold all of his household belongings and moved to Thanagazi tehsil in Alwar district, where he encountered the severe water problem that the villagers faced. It was so severe that it came to be known as the “dark zone”. He focused on rebuilding johads (traditional check dams) instead of exploitative bore wells that further gave rise to water scarcity. Within 3 years this barren landscape was transformed into one of Rajasthan’s most luscious and green fields. In the years that followed, TBS expanded and constructed 4,500 johads in 850 villages across 11 districts in Rajasthan. Rajendra Singh won the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, and Stockholm Water Prize. He was also instrumental in stopping the contentious Loharinag Pala Hydro Power Project. His dedication has inspired many upcoming environmentalists to take up the flag themselves and work towards environmentalist protection and preservation.

Jadhav Payeng – The Forest Man Of India

The Forest Man of India is Jadav Molai Payeng, a forestry worker and environmental campaigner from Majuli. He has planted and cared for trees along the Brahmaputra River’s course for many years, transforming it into a forest reserve. The Mulai Reserve, which has a size of about 2,500 acres, used to be a magnificent location. However, the river floods everything in its path during the monsoon season every year, causing erosion and the destruction of homes and farmland. Every year the reserve shrunk by more than 50% over the past 70 years, and there are worries that it will be completely submerged in 20 years, forcing the 150,000 residents to leave their homes and lose their means of subsistence. And this is when Payeng stood up to help his community and become an inspiration for many.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-JadhavPayeng-Environmentalist-ForestMan-Majuli-trees-plants-hero-mensday

Payeng first planted bamboo before switching to other kinds. Before the trees started producing their own seed, planting trees took a lot of work. The population increased along with the density of his forest. Soon, the forest was home to hundreds of different bird species, as well as deer, rhinos, tigers, and even an elephant herd that wandered into it for three months out of the year. Experts in the field of wildlife have stated that the forest currently draws 80% of the world’s migrating birds. Officially, it is known as Molai forest. To honour Jadav, the people refer to it as Molai. Jadav feels protective of the land because it took almost 30 years for it to become a forest. He began planting in 1979, and he still doing so now.

Zero Waste Living

Every year we generate up to 2 billion tonnes of waste that either ends up in landfills, getting burnt and polluting the environment, or stagnating the earth by remaining on its surface for decades to come. Our rash approach towards the environment has led to a multitude of problems to both humans and animals and it won’t be long before earth becomes devoid of human survival mechanism. Although we cannot abandon generating waste altogether, we can definitely minimise and change our advances to ensure a better future. Zero waste living is one such solution for waste management and disposal, it ensures that we generate less waste and keep a track of it. While Zero waste living is an umbrella term, there are a lot of methods and practices that fall beneath. Impaac aims to divert your attention towards this safe and ecological method, a lot of households have already adopted this practice, have you?

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-planet-sustain-save-protect-donate-waste-free-ZeroWaste

Zero waste living is a way that ensures that we follow the three principles of reduce, reuse and recycle diligently. The concept of zero waste aims to wipe out trash from the environment by adopting the circular economy method where everything is reused and recycled so that nothing ends up in dump yards. This is a tedious process that would require each one of us to practice it with full vigour and determination, to fully adopt a waste free lifestyle, to ensure that we reduce the waste we generate and recycle whatever we can. A lot of waste free stores have also sprung up in various parts of the country as well as worldwide as we see an influx of people conforming to the new waste free lifestyle.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-planet-sustain-save-protect-donate-waste-free-ZeroWaste

Waste free lifestyle is not hard to achieve and doesn’t require you to make much changes in your lifestyle, it is about changing your approaches and adopting new methods to replace them in such a way that ensures little to no waste disposal. Some ways in which we can adopt a waste free lifestyle are as follows:
• Take your own containers or bags for grocery shopping
• Whenever you go to any restaurants, make sure to not leave leftovers and instead pack it in a lunch box
• Replace face wipes with handkerchiefs, plastic bottles with steel ones, plastic cutlery with wooden or steel ones etc.
• Do not indulge in single use containers, cutlery etc
• Compost your food waste
• Donate your things to the needy so as to stop them from going into landfills
• Invest in high quality so they last longer

Solar Energy – An Ecological Solution To Energy Consumption

India has a staggering population of 138 crores that consummates about 816 kwh per capita that results in environmental degradation and leads to air pollution, climate change, water pollution, thermal pollution, solid waste disposal etc. It also dwindles resources that will soon result in a shortage of the same if we continue using it at the same pace and hamper our future generations. Edmund Becquerel is credited with the discovery of social energy that helped us to suffice our needs while also taking care of its effects on our environment. Solar energy is when energy is extracted from the sun and then converted into thermal or electrical energy that is easily usable by humans and is also a great alternative to reduce the drastic consequences on our environment.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Sustainable-solarenergy-solar-afforestation-deforestation-school-essay

Solar energy is advantageous in so many ways that benefit both the environment as well as us, while there are many ways in which it is necessary to us a few of them have been listed below:
• Solar energy is essential in meeting the world’s needs and would not run out anytime soon as compared to fossil fuels.
• Solar energy is good for the environment and doesn’t hamper nature and its components, it can be used over and over again without exhausting any of our resources.
• Solar panel may seem quite expensive at first but it helps in saving money in the long run.
• It curbs pollution and helps in making it environment friendly
• It is inexhaustible
• Combats climate change

The primary focus of MTD has been on Sustainable Development. Their mission lies in providing the youth with education, proper nutrition and guidance and plant more and more trees in order to live fulfilling lives. However, after the impact of COVID-19, they have also brought to attention various causes such as climate change, poverty and hunger, unemployment, and illiteracy. They now have a mission to plant 75,000 trees on Mira Road, Thane. This can be easily accomplished if we all join hands and plant one plant each.

Our Environment

Environment – 7 Billion people call it home. Human’s greed has been a great threat to our environment. According to a report, estimated 9 lakh premature deaths will take place by 2040 due to air pollution. Various species of animals & plants have faced extinction & majority are endangered. Lack of proper garbage disposal makes an unhygienic country of ours. Plastic is non-biodegradable & can cause pollution & deaths in our environment. Major problems like climate change, Global warming, Depletion of Ozone layer, food poisioning due to harmful pesticides & fertilizers are continuously growing.

If not you know, then who? If not now, then when?

Help Them To Save Nature

Project Shoonya : The essence of this project lies in working at a grass-root level with the public and local governing bodies, and making proper waste management happen, one household at a time. Through community mobilization, they aim to replace the huge landfills and dumping grounds with greener and cleaner recycling grounds, instill a sense of waste management in all residents, and finally, prevent any further waste contamination and pollution from happening. Here’s how your donations would help.

  • Sponsor a public awareness session for the general public on segregation of waste and proper waste disposal.
  • Fund our cost of running recycling and segregation centres.
  • Employee an underprivileged person to our Project.
  • Provide the staff with safety kits containing PPE kits, gloves, masks, etc.

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

Enough! It’s us who need to take step to stop this. But, What do you want to change?

Making the difference has recognised these issues and are coming up with good alternatives. Following RRR strategy for sustainability – reduce, reuse, recycle. Using cloth bag, public transport, proper waste disposal & planting more trees can be followed easily by us in our day to day lives. Let’s get together & encourage everyone to protect Mother nature. With a target to plant 75000 plants on Mira road in Mumbai, we cannot do it all alone. Our small steps will make a big difference. Lack of oxygen due to pollution can lead to numerous medical problems which we need to avoid. Like good income gives good education, good environment gives good health. It’s our responsibility to take initiative. Come forward & Contribute your bit now. Let’s gift a healthy & sustainable environment to our future generations.

Water Pollution – Causes, Effects and Actions

Water pollution refers to the contamination of water sources by harmful toxins that make the water unfit for human or animal use. Some contaminants include chemicals, trash, bacteria, parasites etc. as they pollute the water sources that in turn pollute the environment. Water pollution in turn has led many places to have such severe droughts that has left many starving for water. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) polluted water is water whose composition has been changed to the extent that it is unusable. Water pollution is a major concern for today’s generation, we are even unsure if we will get clean water after a few years. However, many organisations as well as young individuals are working towards water conservation and attempting to make it last as long as humanity does.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Water-pollution-causes-effects-action-school-essay

Causes

A physical disturbance of the land occurs whenever large numbers of people congregate in one dense area. The use of detergents, chemicals, and exhaust emissions from the construction of new roads, residences, and sectors of the economy has an impact on the sanitation of the water. When it rains, these chemicals wash into streams and rivers eventually making their way into the drinking water supply. When a large amount of oil spills into the sea and does not dissolve in water, it poses a significant threat to marine life. It harms local marine wildlife, such as fish, birds, and sea otters. Discharging of litter and faeces, according to the UN, more than 80% of the world’s sewage ends up untreated in oceans and waterways.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Water-pollution-causes-effects-action-school-essay

Effects

Biodiversity destruction. Polluted water depletes marine environment and causes uncontrolled phytoplankton proliferation in lakes (eutrophication). The food chain has been contaminated. Toxins introduced into foods by fishing in polluted waters and using waste water for livestock farming and agriculture can be harmful to our health when consumed. Polluted water has consequences that go beyond human health and the environment. Before contaminated water supplies can be used for irrigation, washing, or swimming, they must go through a rigorous treatment process. This comes at a financial cost that is prohibitive to human progress. Meanwhile, another economic impact of water pollution is the loss of revenue experienced by certain parts of the world’s tourism industry.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-Water-pollution-causes-effects-action-school-essay

Action

There are a few simple ways in which we can contribute our bit towards improving the water quality and making it accessible for everyone:
• During religious rituals make sure to not pollute the water sources and be conscious towards our planet.
• Industries should be conscious about how they release the waste water into water resources, they should be made free of contaminants and then released into water bodies so that it is not polluting water.
• Farmers should make efforts to not use pesticides or insecticides and instead use natural ones so that the chemicals do not seep into underground water sources.
• Washing clothes or animals is also not advisable in open water sources as both heavily contribute towards water pollution.
• Always be conscious of how little things can lead to water pollution and hence take efforts to learn and help solve this problem.

Aakarsh is a trained architect who identified the problem of the vendors as they get gas lanterns from their homes and spend about 250 Rs every week, it is also hard to work under the dysfunctional lights due to the concerns of safety and customers not being able to see what they are buying. Vendors loose anywhere between 500 to 1000 Rs every due as they have to return home early due to the insufficiency of lights around in the area. He conducted an extensive market research before inventing Bepolite by speaking with the street vendors in the city and taking notice of some of their major problems and then including it in his Bepolite solution.

Bepolites are solar-powered lamps that provide light for long hours along with phone charging facility so that vendors can accept online payment for long durations and do not fall behind in sales of their commodities. It is furthermore sustainable and would help and benefit the environment in a positive way. He took the route of crowdfunding to raise the amount required for his Bepolite solution that went on to impact and benefit more that 200 vendors so far. He wishes to provide this solution to vendors from all over the country so that everyone benefits from it. The Bepolite is not only effective on the streets but also at home where these vendors can use it in their day-to-day life as well.

Bepolite where po-lite stands for portable light that is sustainable but at the same time does not compromise on the intensity of the system. This initiative is encouraging the often-overlooked entrepreneurs to devote more time and efficiency in their work that would in turn increase their income and quality of livelihoods. The youngsters of the country have been mostly involved in the campaign and act as volunteers for such a noble cause. They sell these lights at a cheaper rate of €5 while the remaining €30 are sponsored by various people or organisations. His work has been recognised widely as we appreciate him for his kind and generous thinking about one of the ignored communities of street vendors.

Floods – A Devastating Thread

Floods have become a very common scenario in post modern India as well as in the world. The recent Assam floods have once again proved that nature is the creator and the ravager when the need arises. It is not the effect of a single day exploitation of mother earth but years and years of cruel practices against nature carried out by humans, the price of which innocents have to pay in the form of loss of life and property. A flood is described as the overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. Every year $40 billion dollars are affected due to floods and many lose their lives in this devastation. Even after the floods have subsided, it is still a hazard to human health due to the many water borne diseases and scarcity of proper food and water. Impaac brings an article about Floods – a devastating thread.

Rainfall is one of the prime causes of floods as it raises the water levels in rivers, ponds, lakes etc. and that in turn causes floods. The water force is so strong that entire villages and cities are wiped out of existence. Broken dams are another cause of flooding as old and weakened dams fall apart during heavy rains and an immense gush of water devastates unsuspecting households and kills many. Villages situated on the lower ground and in a shape that retains water is the most prone to floods. Global warming has had a devastating impact on the ecosystem as ice caps and glaciers are melting leading to increased water levels that floods towns and villages lying in the lowlands causing harm to life.

While floods cannot be predicted in advance nor can be stopped altogether however, we can still take some precautions during, before and after floods.
• Plant more trees to reduce the effect of global warming and hence preventing the ice caps and glaciers from melting.
• Gain a good knowledge about your surroundings and live in a place that is not low-lying and instead situated on the high ground.
• If your area is prone to floods always keep exit routes and possible safe grounds in your mind.
• Do not go near water sources during heavy rains and if possible do not live close to any of the water sources.

Air Pollution – Causes, Effects and Actions

Air pollution has become a major concern in today’s day and age and poses health threats to both people and animals. According to the WHO every year an estimated 7 million people fall prey to death due to air pollution while 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of harmful pollutants. Air pollution can be defined as the presence of harmful chemicals and or substances in the air that cause harm to living beings, the atmosphere, climate, materials etc. It gives rise to a multitude of diseases like heart problems, lung cancer, respiratory diseases etc. in humans that can be fatal in nature. Some of the major pollutants present in air include carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter etc. However, in the past few decades, we have become more considerate towards our planet as more and more organisations have sprouted and looking after our atmosphere and the planet has become a household issue.

Causes Of Air Pollution

Air pollution can sprout from a wide variety of causes something even so minor like using refrigerators, ac’s or perfume sprays as they cause the earth’s protective layer of ozone to become thin or even slowly diminish. Burning of garbage waste releases toxic and harmful chemicals that mix with the air and cause air pollution. India is the land of farms as acres of land are used in this occupation however farmers tend to burn the stubble after harvesting the crops leading to increased levels of air pollution across the country. Vehicles and transportation in general also release chemicals like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter etc. that are extremely harmful for the environment. These are some of the main causes of air pollution in the environment.

Effects Of Air Pollution

Air pollution can cause long term effects on people such as heart problems, asthma, lung cancer and respiratory diseases like emphysema. Scientists have also suspected that exposure of expecting mothers to air pollution can also cause birth defects in the child. Air pollution kills up to 7 million people each year, a number enough to scare us of the pollutant’s harmful nature. These pollutants also lead to smog that causes low visibility and prevents sunlight from entering the earth’s atmosphere. The ozone layer has diminished from some parts of the world that leads to harmful effects on the environment, people and animals. It also harms metals, marble etc. and a leading example of that is the Taj Mahal which is slowly transforming its colour from white to yellow.

Actions On Air Pollution

We can still save the environment and the air blanket by being a little conscious of our actions and practising sustainability in our everyday lives. Some ways in which we can achieve this is:
• Avoid using cars for small distances and turn to cycling or use public transportation whenever possible.
• Recycle and reuse so that you generate less waste and it doesn’t end up polluting the air by burning.
• Use fans instead of ac’s so that chlorofluorocarbons (Cfc’s) are not released in the air and end up polluting it.
• Avoid bursting crackers as it releases a lot of chemicals and causes trouble to both humans and animals.
• Practise afforestation as it cleanses the air of its harmful chemicals.

The Curse Of Climate Change

According to the UN climate change can be defined as long term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. This phenomenon is not alien to us as we frequently hear or even experience climate change around us or we must have heard our parents say that earlier the climate patterns were a lot more balanced than it is today. Climate change is mainly driven by irrational human activities over the ages whose consequences we have to bear now in terms of extreme heat or cold, floods in one part or droughts in the other, global warming, diseases, food and water scarcity etc. However, it is still not to late to help our planet onto the road to recovery and make it feasible for our future generations to come. 2015 to 2021 are the seven warmest years recorded in the history of our planet and if the trend continues, we will have to face record staggering global disasters. Since 1880, the rate of warming has only increased and effected more people.

Causes Of Climate Change

Climate change is not a recent phenomenon and has been around from as long as we can remember and it is the cause of many disasters around the world but what are exactly the causes of climate change?
Fossil Fuels are being used to produce electricity is one of the major contributors of global warming that has drastically increased heatwaves all across the world. In the recent years the demand for goods has increased manifold leading to manufacturers producing emission that affect our climate in a negative way. Incessant cutting of trees, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions etc have led to such drastic consequences. Human interferences as such with the nature has led to harmful effects on both humans and animals as we all struggle to survive amidst such harsh climatic changes and the constant fear of natural disasters.

Effects Of Climate Change

We don’t need to scour far and wide to look for the effects of climate change as it is so very common that it is easily visible around us. Droughts, floods, global warming, glaciers melting etc. have become ever so common in the past few decades. While one part of the world faces such devastating floods that washes the livelihoods of millions away the other part faces droughts that leave people and animals desperate for water. The temperature of earth continues to soar as we see unbearable summers, glaciers have started melting at an alarming rate as animals like polar bears find it difficult to survive. Wildfires are also at an all time high, the dry leaves quickly catch fire due to the soaring temperature and destroys millions of acres of forestland further aggravating the problem of climate change.

Actions on Climate Change

Some ways we can still protect ourselves and our planet have been mentioned herein so that we can somehow reduce the effects of climate change.
• Practice afforestation by planting sapling in and around our house.
• Take the public transport instead of your car to locations easily accessible by them.
• Use renewable sources of energy like solar energy.
• Practice the 3R’s of sustainability – reduce, reuse and recycle.
• Save energy whenever possible, switch off fans and lights when not in use, close water taps so as to not waste water.
These are some ways in which we can effectively mange to curb down climate change, share the blog with your friends and family and take an action today.

Assam Floods – The Start To Food And Water Crisis

What Really Happened

The terrifying Assam floods have left a devastating aftermath for the people and animals to suffer from and continue to do so. What started as drizzling rains that helped people after the extreme summer soon took the form of floods that destroyed and displaced many across Assam. From the last one week the state has been facing acute rainfall that has left over lakhs of people impacted. There have been landslides due to the structural constructions on the landscape of Assam that has left people dead or missing also the structure of the place is like a bowl that makes it susceptible to water logging. The situation has become so critical that the Indian Army had to intervene and help the common people in this crisis.
