Help Piku and Paw To Get Three Hundred Community Dogs Sterilized

The Inspiration Behind Sterilization

Priyamvada and her friend Varsha are raising funds for the sterilization of 300 community dogs.

There was a mama dog who was pushed to deliver her babies in a drain. She passed away two days after giving birth. She carried these babies for 65 very difficult days – keeping herself alive on bits of rotten food, filthy water, abuse, and zero rest only to not be able to spend time with them or be there for them when they needed her the most. The babies did not get the chance to even look at their own mama. Who deserves that? They don’t know what killed her – did her body give up because of multiple pregnancies or was it depression from not being able to fend for her babies or abuse from unrelenting humans or her own general physical health that killed her. All they know is that it is on all of us. We all have not bothered to care for our animals – they’re not eating well, they’re not sleeping well, they’re getting beaten up day in and day out. When they were reported about the babies, they immediately arranged for fosters who could hand-raise the babies. So many well-meaning, qualified and experienced people got involved and they both did everything in their power to help. 48 hours – not a single one of these cubs survived. That is 9 precious little lives lost, including the mother. There are thousands of female dogs that get killed every day just like this one, thousands that live in depression for not being able to fend for their babies while barely keeping themselves alive and thousands that will continue to die if we don’t do anything about it.

There is only one thing that could have prevented this situation – STERILIZATION and hence this fundraiser.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-funds-10rganic-sustainableDevelopment-president-sustainable-help-support

What Do They Do?

They have gotten 500 community dogs sterilized ever since they started in November last year. Like any other journey it was a slow start but once they gained experience, they were able to help more of our little animals in need. While 500 may seem like a big number, it fades in comparison to the number of dogs that continue to suffer and could really be helped by sterilizing them.

To any sterilization program, speed and consistency are of essence. To ensure that their sterilization drives are effective, they will need to put in consistent efforts and get as many animals sterilized as possible until they reach at least 80% sterilization in one geography. To continue the sterilization program, Varsha and Priyamvada have given themselves a new target of another 300 little animals and to raise funds for that they have put this fundraiser together.

They’re really scared about the target. Sterilization is not known, understood or supported by many. But they’re determined because they know that the animals are in desperate need for it. It breaks our hearts to see our animals suffer so badly. Sterilization is the single best way to alleviate their struggle in the long run. Please help them to help their little animals and consider donating to our fundraiser. Every single contribution (big or small) counts. Please also extend your solidarity by sharing our appeal with your friends and family. We’re only as strong as you are.

Help Them To Help Strays

VET PARTNERS

Their veterinarian partners for the sterilization drives are Friendicoes (https://friendicoes.org/) from Delhi. It costs them Rs.1,700 for one dog. This includes the sterilization surgery, their transport to and from Friendicoes and their anti-rabies shot.

They’re raising a total fund of Rs.1,700 x 300 = Rs. 5,10,000

Every single penny will be transferred to them directly.

WHY IS STERILIZATION IMPORTANT

[1] Scanty resources – Our community dogs survive on scanty resources. Their main source of food is our collective garbage – rotten bread loaves, dried and hard roties, rotten vegetable peels, and leftover packaged food. They can barely fend for themselves. Most of them go hungry for days together. One meal a day is a distant dream. Imagine having to be responsible for 10 more little lives.

[2] Dogs are extremely sensitive – Mama dogs are extremely sensitive. Not being able to feed their babies affects them immensely. If they are not able to take care of their babies, it pushes them into depression.

[3] Health of the female dogs – One female dog can produce babies twice a year and each time they can produce up to 11 babies. Our community dogs aren’t in the best of their health. Becoming pregnant twice in one year or even once every year affects their health adversely. They become anemic and weak. On most occasions their bodies can’t bear the pregnancy and they either pass away with the babies still undelivered or die immediately post their delivery.

[4] It protects them from cancers – There are a number of potentially fatal health conditions and transmissible diseases that animals can contract or develop as a result of being intact and breeding; for example, pyometra, TVT, and reproductive cancers. These risks are eliminated when the animal is spayed or neutered.

[5] Prevents fights among male dogs and subsequently saves them from deep wounds that get infested with maggots and if not tended to (which is mostly the case) can prove fatal.

On the whole, animals who have been sterilized at an early age tend to live longer, healthier lives, potentially increasing their lifespans by an average of one to three years for dogs, and three to five years for cats.

THEIR EXPERIENCE IN RESCUE WORK

Together they’ve gotten 500 community dogs sterilized so far with the help of their partners Dogs (& Cats) of Delhi and a Vancouver based charity – Yogi Street Dog Rescue Society. Together they’ve rescued hundreds of dogs. Varsha has been rescuing for more than 7 years and Priyamvada has been doing it for the past 4 years. They’ve only recently started documenting their work on – Piku and Paw

They are not a registered NGO. They only help the animals on an individual level. They mostly make use of their salaries or raise funds from time to time. This is their first ever big fundraiser. They do hope to be able to achieve their goal.

Thank you all immensely for your kindness.

Please be kind to your community animals.

Jadhav Payeng – The Forest Man Of India

The Forest Man of India is Jadav Molai Payeng, a forestry worker and environmental campaigner from Majuli. He has planted and cared for trees along the Brahmaputra River’s course for many years, transforming it into a forest reserve. The Mulai Reserve, which has a size of about 2,500 acres, used to be a magnificent location. However, the river floods everything in its path during the monsoon season every year, causing erosion and the destruction of homes and farmland. Every year the reserve shrunk by more than 50% over the past 70 years, and there are worries that it will be completely submerged in 20 years, forcing the 150,000 residents to leave their homes and lose their means of subsistence. And this is when Payeng stood up to help his community and become an inspiration for many.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-JadhavPayeng-Environmentalist-ForestMan-Majuli-trees-plants-hero-mensday

Payeng first planted bamboo before switching to other kinds. Before the trees started producing their own seed, planting trees took a lot of work. The population increased along with the density of his forest. Soon, the forest was home to hundreds of different bird species, as well as deer, rhinos, tigers, and even an elephant herd that wandered into it for three months out of the year. Experts in the field of wildlife have stated that the forest currently draws 80% of the world’s migrating birds. Officially, it is known as Molai forest. To honour Jadav, the people refer to it as Molai. Jadav feels protective of the land because it took almost 30 years for it to become a forest. He began planting in 1979, and he still doing so now.

Wangari Maathai’s Life and Lessons

Wangari Muta Maathai was the late 19th and early 20th century Kenyan social, environmental and political activist who was influential in bringing about a great change in Kenya’s environmental and political advances. She was the first African woman to receive a doctorate in veterinary anatomy from the University of Nairobi where she further went on to teach that very subject. She served in the National Council of Women as an active member originally and then went on to become it’s chairman wherein she advocated the idea of planting trees and make it a grassroot effort from people so that they can sustain both their livelihoods as well as the environment.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-WaangariMaathai-Environmentalist-environment-politicalactivist-environmentalactivist

When local Kenyan women complained of how the streams were drying up, how they had to walk long distances to collect firewood and how the food supply was less, Wangari Maathai decided to introduce the green belt movement, she motivated the local women to plant seedlings so that their need for food, firewood, rainwater harvesting were met. The green belt movement that began as part of a small initiative was now a part of something much greater. Campaigns and seminars were held around Africa about this movement as it campaigned for the need for individuals to fight and survive for their political, environmental and economic circumstances. They began demanding for more democratic space as well as fought against land grabbing and the encroachment of agriculture into forest lands.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-WaangariMaathai-Environmentalist-environment-politicalactivist-environmentalactivist

Her work was widely recognised after she was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her conservation and protection efforts. The green belt movement became to be known around the world as it showed how grassroot level ideas from a singe person can bring the whole community together for the greater good of the society. She published books that advocated the notion further, such as The Green Belt Movement, Unbowed, The Challenge for Africa, and Replenishing the Earth. She was also appointed as the goodwill ambassador for the Congo Basin Forest Ecosystem also known as the World’s second lung after the Amazon rainforest.

The Story Of Saalumarada Thimakka

While we continue to hamper the environment for our personal benefits there are very few who attempt to reverse the drastic consequences that human actions have on the environment. Out of these few environmentalists is Salumarrada Thimakka who is on a one-woman mission to convert her surroundings into a green abode for everyone to rest at and experience the uniqueness of nature. She started the initiative with her late husband and is now an inspiration for the people who are bothered and dare to dream to change the world. While many of us would disregard the need to get their hands in the mud and pave the way for others to join in, Saalumarada ji took this initiative when none could even dream about it.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-SalumarradaThimakka-environment-trees-sustainable-protecttrees-Karnataka

Salumarrada Thimmaka is an avid environmentalist from Karnataka who has dedicated her life to plant and sustain trees for a better future for everybody. She is better noted for her work along the highway between Hulikal and Kudur where she planted close to 400 banyan trees as well as 8000 more in and around her village and surroundings. Both husband and wife used to travel 4 kilometres everyday to plant and nurture their little saplings, they used to manage them using whatever meagre resources they had. These saplings were like kids to them as they never had their own as Thimmakkas sacrificed and used everything they had to take care of these saplings that would soon grow up to be luscious trees that provided fruits and flowers to everyone. Her work has been honoured with the National Citizen’s Award of India. Her work was recognised by the Government of India and she was conferred with Padma Shri in 2019.

Let’s Celebrate Diwali The Old-Fashioned Way

Diwali has always been the festival of lights, happiness and celebrating the good over evil, but is it fair that we become evil in our mad pursuit to celebrate it in the grandest way possible? Every year air pollution increases by a considerable amount during and after Diwali due to the incessant overuse of firecrackers. Its not just the environment that we harm we also harm those around and near us like children, old people, animals etc. these can cause an everlasting effect and can also permanently damage their body and render them insufficient to do things on their own. However, youngsters, Ngo’s and even families have started taking the initiative to not burst firecrackers or indulge in activities harmful to self and others. This has come about with a lot of protests, awareness campaigns, and years of trying to change the system for a better tomorrow.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-diwali-celebration-family-firecrackers-animals-sufferring-environment-sustainable-pros-cons

Diwali brings with itself happiness and prosperity for all but is it fair if we harm and not care about the happiness and prosperity of those around us? Firecrackers contain harmful chemicals like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides that are responsible for global warming and the constant climate change in the environment. Some ruthless citizens also try to harm animals by putting or tying firecrackers to their body parts resulting in grave harm or sometimes even death. The festival also brings with it a lot of waste going to landslides due to the need and purchase of new things or materials. Fast fashion industries are also benefitted due to the consumer’s need for the latest trends in the market, all of these significantly contribute in the need to address this grave issue in front of us.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-diwali-celebration-family-firecrackers-animals-sufferring-environment-sustainable-pros-cons

So this Diwali let’s celebrate it the eco-friendly and old-fashioned way:
• Switch out new clothes for the old and beautiful sarees in your mom’s wardrobe
• Do not burst firecrackers or minimise their usage
• Whenever you go out to buy something make sure to carry your own container or cloth bags
• Instead of using candles or heavy lanterns use earthen oil diyas to light up your homes and offices
• Instead of using powdered rangoli and heavy on paper and plastic decoratives, use natural flowers to decorate your house
• Reduce, reuse and recycle
• Gift handmades to your guests instead of store brought items

Decoding Mental Health

We must have heard the term mental health being thrown around the internet quite a lot but have we really understood its meaning in its broader sense. It is a serious issue that is still considered a taboo around the world in many places. Families struggle to accept when their child faces any mental health issues and continue to disregard the importance of supporting the individual during this tough phase of their lives. Mental health includes and prioritizes our emotional, psychological, and social well – being. Our mood and behaviour is impacted drastically due to this as we may incur violent or mild mood swings and the constant urge to take a nap or be idle. Consulting a therapist during the early signs or symptoms is the best solution anyone can offer; professional help is much needed before its too late.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-mentalhealth-depression-anxiety-panic-ocd-pain-mental-Schizophrenia-bipolar-therapist-help-Seekhelp

while there is a vast area that is to cover when you study about mental illnesses, a few of them stand out quite a bit, some common some not so common. Now let’s look at some of the most common ones:

1. Depression – Depression can cause frequent lowering of a person’s mood and the urge to not do anything.
2. Anxiety Disorder – anxiety disorder is the feeling of intense anxiety or panic given any stressful situation that can also transform into physical reactions such as finger scrunching, or foot tapping.
3. Bipolar – Bipolar causes extreme mood swings sometimes depressively low while on the other times manically high.
4. Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally, it may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behaviour that impairs daily functioning.
5. Eating Disorder/Anorexia – Anorexia is a mental health issue that makes a person obsessed with their weight and what they eat, it can make them eat very little or even too much for a person.
6. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – obsessive compulsive disorders tend to make a person very adamant on having particular things to their liking, OCD often centres on themes such as a fear of germs or the need to arrange objects in a specific manner. Symptoms usually begin gradually and vary throughout life.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-mentalhealth-depression-anxiety-panic-ocd-pain-mental-Schizophrenia-bipolar-therapist-help-Seekhelp

Whenever we start to feel the symptoms of mental illnesses, it is very important to seek professional help and not wait out for too long. We all might face little episodes of feeling down, or having anxiety but when these start to multiply or appear more frequently or on a wider scale, that is when we know that we require help. Supressing these feelings would lead to drastic consequences in terms of mental or physical pain, trouble and trauma. You should discuss and talk openly about these feelings and thoughts with your family and friends. Taking frequent naps, resting and giving yourself some time to lay back can also help you to take appropriate and informed decisions.

Steps To Recycle

Recycling is the art of converting old items into new ones and thus using it for a longer period of time. It is a great alternative to the ever-increasing waste disposal issue by trying to increase the longevity of everyday items. Most of the things that are around us can be recycled be it an empty container that can be transformed into a spice box or a dress that can be reworn with minor adjustments. It is a key component in the waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse and recycle, it ensures that we reduce everyday waste output from our homes and hence promote the idea of sustainability. Nowadays, the concept of recycling is a huge boom as we see companies that focus exclusively on the idea of giving a new life to old items, the process has been simplified so that everyone can contribute to the idea.

Everyday household items can be easily recycled easily by sitting in the very comfort of our homes. We can give a new life to the items we do not use anymore instead of throwing them away in the garbage bin, they can be made to serve their full life span. Some ways in which we can recycle old objects are:
• Donate your old clothes, toys etc. to orphanages or ngo’s so that the less privileged get benefited
• Instead of plastic bags use cloth bags
• Food containers can be reused and recycled in our houses to store other things
• Old newspapers or papers can be recycled as wrapping paper to give gifts to family and friends
• Find a recycling centre around your house and drop off recyclable materials and items over there
• Make a compost pit where you can dump over your food waste and that in turn would make for an excellent fertiliser
• Try to commute greener

DaanUtsav – Giving Back To The Society

Daanutsav is the festival of giving wherein we are encouraged to give back to the society by whatever means we can. It takes place every year from 2nd to 8th October as donations come pouring in to help the needy and bridge the gap between the givers and the receivers. It was launched officially in 2009 and was called Joy of Giving Week but was later changed to Daanutsav which is majorly recognised all over India. Every year people from varied backgrounds come together to donate for a noble cause by giving their time, money, resources, or skills back to the society and its people. The daanutsav is very independent and could mean that you help in crowdfunding for someone or something as simple as taking out your maid for a little lunch outside. Little acts of kindness and compassion is what makes Daanutsav live up to its name.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-planet-sustain-save-protect-donate-Daanutsav-giving-receiving-Society

DaanUtsav cannot to be attributed to a single individual, it was the brainchild of many Ngo’s as well as individuals that came together to launch a giving India Week that was to be celebrated as a festival and focused on giving back to the society. These Ngo’s launched several campaigns and ads were run as people discovered this noble festival and kept on adding to the cause. Several celebrities such as Alia Bhatt and Ram Sampath are active members of the Daanutsav and cater to the needs and spirit of the festival. We can help by contributing to the society and celebrating the festival with enthusiasm and zeal and aspire to bring about change in the society.

Chipko Andolan – The First Organized Non-Violent Protest

This tree conservation movement was one of the earliest examples of non-violent protests that originated in India on such a wide scale. The Chipko Andolan started in 1973 in Uttarakhand to reduce the drastic deforestation that took place in those times. Sundarlal Bahugana was one of the prime members of this movement and helped in providing a proper direction to the peaceful protests. Chipko translates to “hug” or “cling to”, as women as well as children embraced trees to stop the loggers from cutting them. This small initiative soon expanded to cover the whole of the Himalayan region and ultimately became the “Save Himalaya Movement”. It was a movement that brought focus from all around the world onto how poor villagers especially women were eventful in bringing about a massive change and played a part in conserving the ecology.

19th century was a period in history when mass industrialisation was in full swing in India as forest contractors cut down trees and villagers faced hardships as their livelihood entirely depended on the resources derived from forests. This forced villagers to form groups and organise themselves around trees in the vicinity in an attempt to protect them from loggers. Chipko andolan gained momentum in and around the Himalayas as finally the then state chief minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna ruled a decision in their favour leading to a huge change in eco – development in the region and around the world.

Chipko Andolan paved a way for many ecological conservation societies to come into being, it became a live example of how even a few people can stand together to fight against various environmental ills. A major impact of the Chipko movement was that it prompted the Union government to amend the Forest act 1947 and introduce the new Forest Conservation Act 1980 which said that forest land cannot be used for commercial purposes. This is one of the very first examples of non – violent protests that shook the nation to its core and influenced the advent of many more eco groups around the world.

Spreading Pawsitivity for Strays with Khushi from Kanpur

About Khushi Bhatia

It all started the day she paid attention to her thoughts when she saw a dog sitting quietly at one side of the road and another moment he was being beaten with an iron rod by a neighbour just because he was a street dog who was sitting on street. Slowly a voice within emerged out of the debris of darkness around it & she saw another self residing in one corner of herself. On 19th December 2021, she made her page and started all this.

India’s Cattle Struggles With The Lumpy Skin Disease

Lumpy skin disease is a new virus that has been seen as a recurrent phenomenon in cattle. Symptoms occur one week after the infection some of its signs include fever, reduced milk production, loss of appetite, water discharge from the eyes and nose, and prominent blisters that can be seen forming on the skin. While the majority of the cases have been noted to be spotted in cattle, some other animals such as giraffes, water buffalos, impalas, etc. Even when animals are getting infected on such a wild scale, people are least concerned as many don’t even know about this terrible disease that is on the loose. Impaac foundation takes the initiative to warn and inform the common people about this disease so that they can identify the disease at an earlier stage and make better-informed decisions about the same.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-planet-sustain-save-protect-donate-LumpySkinDisease-cattle-cow-Kerala-StrayAnimals-KeralaGovernment-Culling-Keralite

However, the lumpy skin disease is not a recent phenomenon as we can see its earlier traces in 19th century Africa for more than 5 years of prolonged disease and death. It spread widely in Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Republic of South Africa, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Somalia, and Cameroon and affected more than 8 million cattle, and caused heavy economic loss across the continent. Many cattle and sheep were slaughtered so that the infection would not spread throughout the world, however, it came back in 2022 in some parts of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to create havoc across lands.

It has already affected many and continues to hamper others on its way to destruction and chaos. How many more animals are we willing to sacrifice for our higher authorities and scientists to take charge and find a permanent solution that eliminates this virus from the face of the earth? It’s high time we take charge and globally work towards finding a solution that protects these gentle beings from suffering anymore.

Man Vs Animal Conflict Escalates In Kerala

Kerala’s streets are home to more than 280,000 dogs. Their population is growing by 20% every year. This year to date, more than 21 unsuspecting people have died due to rabies after being bitten by these stray canines. However, this is not the first time that such instances have taken place in Kerala but this has attracted global concern over the state of these stray dogs. An animal rights forum has approached the Supreme Court opposing the culling of dogs. Instead, the forum has given an alternate set of proposals to resolve the issue. The application challenges the final decision of the Court which is in favour of the culling of the dogs under the provisions of Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2021. Kerala government is being viewed in dim light by many non-governmental organizations as well as the general public due to the absolute lack of empathy shown towards these strays.

Mass killings have occurred in Kerala over the past few decades and it is not a recent phenomenon to see dogs getting beaten and killed. Air guns can be commonly found in people’s homes that they use to harm poor animals. Stray dogs have always been seen as a liability here which has led people to believe that they are insignificant and do not deserve to live a dignified life. Animal lovers have taken to the streets to stop mass dog killings and instead focus on finding other solutions to dog bites and the recurring rabies disease. Dog killing is also a flourishing business that is prominent not only in small villages but also cities as people call them to eliminate strays roaming in and around the area.

On one side when in “god’s own country”, innocent animals are getting killed by humans, many have turned to protests and awareness campaigns to spread the word and help save any more animals from getting killed. This has become a pressing concern for people around the world as everyone is criticizing the Kerala government and prompting them to take the correct step while keeping in mind the lives of millions of strays that depends on this decision. The Kerala government has approached the supreme court to take a decision regarding the issue which is still pending.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-sustainable-afforestation-deforestation-sustainable-planet-sustain-save-protect-donate-dog-Kerala-StrayAnimals-KeralaGovernment-Culling-Keralite

Killing strays and creating a disbalance in the ecology is not the solution for dog bites. A more mature and strategy forward approach should be necessary in order to completely eradicate rabies or dog bites in the state. Many Ngo’s, as well as individuals, have put forth ideas that can help instead of morbidly killing dogs:
• People should take care of domestic dogs instead of abandoning them and leaving them to fend for themselves.
• Proper waste disposal techniques should be applied so that strays do not wander around waste bins
• Veterinary vaccinations should be made frequent and ensured that maximum dogs can get access to it.
• Stray dog shelters should be opened so that dogs do not roam around the streets and also have access to good quality food.
• Sterilize strays so that they do not lead to overpopulation
