Ashok Khosla – The Pioneer Behind Sustainable Development

Out of the 8 billion people present on planet earth only a very few of them actually put in efforts to help nurture and protect the environment from further environmental degradation by devoting their time, money or resources to the cause. Ashok Khosla is one such individual who took it in his own hands to start spreading awareness and working actively to spread the concept of sustainable development in the world. He became deeply invested in the issue during his younger days at Harvard wherein he studied and worked closely with like minded people to arrive at solutions to the drastic consequences of polluting the earth. While others around him were focused on writing about the apocalyptic future Khosla decided to pose solutions so that humanity does not arrive on the brink of depletion.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-funds-AshokKhosla-sustainableDevelopment

He started by educating the general mass and spreading mass awareness by writing and publishing more than 300 professional papers, articles and reports. He soon started development alternatives in 1982 that focused on developing sustainable strategies that are aimed for people from all classes and rungs. Some of their top projects includes integrated village programmes, women empowerment, sustainable habitat, skills and green jobs, etc. He works on the grassroot level to ensure that everyone gets a chance to be a part of a change in the situation.

How To Start Giving

As rightly said by Helen Keller “alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”, as much as changing the face of the world we are living in currently. The act of giving has been discussed and spoken about in abundance but it still is a concept kept discrete. It is the ability to give something either measured in monetary value or service-based value without demanding or expecting anything in return, a selfless act aimed towards helping the underprivileged sections of our society. Little acts of service can contribute towards a greater cause for someone, probable even save someone’s life. Your act of giving doesn’t always need to have a material aspect conjoined with itself, simple acts of kindness like being there for someone during their bad times and lending them emotional support is also an act of giving. While there are multiple ways in which you can start your journey of giving, we have curated top 5 ways in which even you can become a contributor to the smiles of millions around the world.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-giving-charitystartsathome-HelenKeller-Underprivilaged-donate-volunteer-reduce-reuse-recycle-orphanage-old-age-home

Charity starts at home

You must have heard this quote being used a lot when we start talking about charity, its literal meaning is to start at home by giving to your family members, friends and close ones. It implies to fulfil our duties towards the ones who have been with us through thick and thin and then slowly venture out and start helping others. Little acts of giving such as helping a friend start a business by becoming their initial investor or helping your mother start a YouTube channel are all simple yet effective acts of giving. They need not be elaborate gestures but simple yet loving acts that can or may not involve materialistic needs.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-giving-charitystartsathome-HelenKeller-Underprivilaged-donate-volunteer-reduce-reuse-recycle-orphanage-old-age-home

Donate

The next crucial step is to donate, start by donating old cloths, books, etc to the underprivileged or drop them off at orphanages, old – age homes etc. Things that you do not need anymore can be of great value and importance to someone so Instead of them ending up in landfills and contributing to global wastage they could end up being of use to the needy. You can thus indulge in the art of giving without even spending excess while also following the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle. Some things that you can donate to the deprived are:
• Houseware
• Electronic items
• Bedding (pillows, mattresses, comforters etc.)
• Toys
• Books and knowledge material
• Clothing
• Hardware etc.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-giving-charitystartsathome-HelenKeller-Underprivilaged-donate-volunteer-reduce-reuse-recycle-orphanage-old-age-home

Volunteer

Volunteering is another way in which you can participate in the act of giving. Volunteer for community programmes, orphanages, old age homes, charity runs, etc. so that you can be an effectively help the needy upfront. You make sure that the donations are going towards the right use while also helping the underprivileged to make use of those donations. It is a service based giving act where you give your time and labour for community service. You can work as a regular volunteer or as an emergency volunteer that goes to work when emergency situations such as droughts, floods, famines etc hit by making necessary aids available to those hit by the phenomenon. You can start by applying to nearby volunteer-based organisations and start devoting a little amount of your time, love and care to the cause.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-giving-charitystartsathome-HelenKeller-Underprivilaged-donate-volunteer-reduce-reuse-recycle-orphanage-old-age-home

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Just like you give back to your community even the environment around us needs your help, love and care to grow and thrive. Start to give back not dust and pollution but sustainable methods that ensure that the environment sticks with us in the long run. Practice the 3r’s that is reduce, reuse and recycle so that less garbage ends up in landfills and ditches.
• Reduce the amount of material you consume and practice inculcating the “less is more” agenda in your daily life.
• Reuse as many things as possible around your home, if not possible donate them instead of giving them up to landfills
• Recycle materialistic things such as making curtains out of old bedsheets or reusing plastic or tin containers

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-giving-charitystartsathome-HelenKeller-Underprivilaged-donate-volunteer-reduce-reuse-recycle-orphanage-old-age-home

Make it a goal

Practise giving as part of your routine. Save some money every month that goes to charity, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket while also fulfilling someone’s dream. Make short term goals like volunteering for a particular organisation or participating in a charity run so that even in your busy life you can dedicate some time, money, labour, love and care to the needy and the deprived. Do not allow yourself to get out of this habit of giving be it however meagre it be, remember it is better to start giving more once your financial condition improves rather than start from the bottom and start giving again.

M Yoganathan – The Conductor Turned Environmentalist

The Tree Man, also known as Marimuthu Yoganathan, is an Indian environmenal activist who worked as a bus driver before gradually developing a lifelong love of nature. M. Yoganathan battled against the timber mafia in the Nilgiris while still in school by putting handwritten signs on walls, marking the locations of treefelling with survey numbers, and pleading with law enforcement and forest officials to prosecute those responsible. He began his career as a bus conductor, but that didn’t quench his hunger for environmental activism; today, he offers free saplings to bus passengers in exchange for their tickets, and he devotes a significant amount of his salary to this cause.

He had a close relationship with Tamil Nadu Green Movement activist Jayachandran in Kotagiri, and this relationship only fueled his passion in nature preservation. In 1999, Yoganathan started working for the Tamil Nadu state transport company. Due to his frequent absences from work, he has been transferred 40 times in his 17 years of employment as a bus conductor. Nevertheless, he keeps pushing for environmental safety, and his family continues to assist him in this endeavour. According to him, almost 5,000 schools in the state replied to his request on June 5, World Environment Day, to swear an oath to preserve the environment and plant at least one tree on their campus.Despite this, not many people are familiar with him or his work. We however work our way to introduce this magnificient personality to the many people who continue to look on for inspiration.

Rajendra Singh – The Waterman Of India

Rajendra Singh is an active environmentalist hailing from Rajasthan who has been up to his environmental activism since the late 90’s. He is also known as the waterman of India for his efforts to save and preserve the water resources in and around Rajasthan not just for the state but for all of India’s benefit. While still being in school, he got himself involved in a lot of social causes like village sanitation program, alcoholism eradification program, opened up a library for the village kids, while also solving local conflicts. His active efforts continued all through his adulthood as he joined the Tarun Bharat Sangh through sustainable development initiatives, Tarun Bharat Sangh attempts to improve the lives of an impoverished segment of the population. Soon after he reorganised the whole organisation into a more effective movement that focused majorly on environmental issue around India.

Crowdfunding-Benefits-Impaac-Foundation-non-profit-platform-environmentalist-MYoganathan-RajendraSingh-environmnetalist-environment-save-help-protect-saplings-plants-waterman-drought-Rajasthan-Alwar

He was tormented by the inability of his superiors to do anything to save the environment or save Rajasthan as it faced severe drought all around the year. He finally left his job, sold all of his household belongings and moved to Thanagazi tehsil in Alwar district, where he encountered the severe water problem that the villagers faced. It was so severe that it came to be known as the “dark zone”. He focused on rebuilding johads (traditional check dams) instead of exploitative bore wells that further gave rise to water scarcity. Within 3 years this barren landscape was transformed into one of Rajasthan’s most luscious and green fields. In the years that followed, TBS expanded and constructed 4,500 johads in 850 villages across 11 districts in Rajasthan. Rajendra Singh won the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, and Stockholm Water Prize. He was also instrumental in stopping the contentious Loharinag Pala Hydro Power Project. His dedication has inspired many upcoming environmentalists to take up the flag themselves and work towards environmentalist protection and preservation.

Help Pramiti Foundation to build a Home for Paws In Need at Kanpur

About Pramiti Foundation's Journey

Kanika Mishra, the founder of Pramiti Foundation, says that she was fortunate enough in having an upbringing where believing in Karma played a major role. Being kind to all living being was not just said but implemented since childhood. While she has seen growing both her parents helping everyone they can they could this is in gene. She has always found herself attracted towards wagging tails and eventually developed love for all animals. A little bit of Nik and nack she started her journey for feeding and aiding animals few days before lockdown during pandemic in 2020.

What Do They Do?

Started feeding 150+ doggo kids all alone during entire lockdown she has unfortunately always been a single woman army. She thinks the reason of being single work woman is because somewhere she feels she have had a great experience to serve with the years of experience she has covered globally in her profession. PS – no overlooking eye for detail is her style and it never works in local market however , being a strong believer and keeping integrity to the highest she continued to be with doggo kids at the moment feeding 85+ daily fostering special need 7 at the moment ofcourse the numbers decrease rather increase more or less !!

Conducting mega drive twice or thrice a month where she ended up feeding 100+ doggo kids conducting vaccination drives to deworming drive every second month special festive day drive and so on.

Their Vision

Spreading compassion by following the rule of EMPATHY & not SYMPATHY

The need to raise fund is important because she was a mum to nearly 85 plus the fosters and the on going cases isn’t manageable all alone now. With a vision of doing something for a long run made her realise her sad financial statements as she lost her job during pandemic and couldn’t join back in the city as either the pay was too low or she dint find a job. Now her focus is on just one thing make this goodness a lifestyle!! For that she has to get educated a slightly bit more into the stream of animal welfare and that’s why she appointed a guy from the mountains called Deepak to help see the kids who she is paying 20000inr 90000inr for the rented space where foster kids and Deepak stay cannot put them in society as we were anyways about to end up in trouble having excessive dogs in flat.

The campaign can help her share the load and so that she can focus more on what’s worth focusing wisely.

Help Them To Help Strays

Can’t say about how she can inspire but all stories of her kids are special to her. The journey of her kids with herself is non comparison. The feeling of being with wagging tails has actually helped her recover her depression to a point that she could have done too bad & would have been such a weak person to think of not living. One such beautiful memory is Coco whom she found her while she went to drink Sugarcane juice on a extremely hot afternoon may 2021. Coco was just say 2m/o pup dumped below the molasses and her hand was covered with flies &worms . Throwing the glass in trash she saw that little eye of hope sparkling and then she realized.

And then she realized that it was madam coco underneath those straws of sugarcane. She immediately picked her up and took her right outside the nearest medical store brought a bottle of betadine liquid and cleaned her wound then she took her to the nearest vet who wasn’t available as it was some Sunday places were not operational. She took madam coco to my place and did a tentative dressing of her hand as it was releasing such pungent discharge that her room started to have flies . Seems like her wound was rotten already. Next day she took her to another vet who is claimed also to be the one of best where he passed a statement which was too inappropriate for coco’s life and she definitely didn’t liked it. Well she kept shut let him do his job but she knew she ain’t coming back there. Finally that evening after searching a lot on good reliable vet she was recommended to Aastha Pet Clinic to Dr Kuldeep gautum. Her first interaction with him wasn’t very low as she clearly mentioned him that don’t treat her in a way please that she is from the streets treat her well as I’m a family now. And the kickass response was “Madam meri table me 3rs 300 3000 ya 300000 ka bhi dog hoga” or agar hope hogi to mai treatment karunga. These action lines build in slight confidence. After 45 continuous days of the surgery the back and forth visits to the visit to sleepless nights to mood swings our coco stood on three legs being one of the most naughty doggo in the place now. Though she has a lot of human fear in her but this is again something else she was working on. Her little one is nearly an year now by god’s grace healthy and naughty. Coco’s case made her feel like a mother the pain the cries the suffer of this little soul made her cry each time wondering why this is happening why that is happening how can she be saved etc . Coco isn’t less than her daughter!!

The Forest Man of India is Jadav Molai Payeng, a forestry worker and environmental campaigner from Majuli. He has planted and cared for trees along the Brahmaputra River’s course for many years, transforming it into a forest reserve. The Mulai Reserve, which has a size of about 2,500 acres, used to be a magnificent location. However, the river floods everything in its path during the monsoon season every year, causing erosion and the destruction of homes and farmland. Every year the reserve shrunk by more than 50% over the past 70 years, and there are worries that it will be completely submerged in 20 years, forcing the 150,000 residents to leave their homes and lose their means of subsistence. And this is when Payeng stood up to help his community and become an inspiration for many.

Payeng first planted bamboo before switching to other kinds. Before the trees started producing their own seed, planting trees took a lot of work. The population increased along with the density of his forest. Soon, the forest was home to hundreds of different bird species, as well as deer, rhinos, tigers, and even an elephant herd that wandered into it for three months out of the year. Experts in the field of wildlife have stated that the forest currently draws 80% of the world’s migrating birds. Officially, it is known as Molai forest. To honour Jadav, the people refer to it as Molai. Jadav feels protective of the land because it took almost 30 years for it to become a forest. He began planting in 1979, and he still doing so now.

Basanti Devi – The Environmentalist Behind Saving The Kosi River

Basanti Devi is an Indian environmentalist who is attributed to be the mind and hand behind saving the Kosi River in Uttarakhand. Her life had been a tough testament to her struggles, she was married off to an older man when she was just 12, and within two years of her marriage, her husband died as she was sent off to live in an ashram for girls. At the mere age of 14, she started living at the Kausani ashram that was founded by Sarla Behn. She also started pursuing her studies and looking after children and women in the facility. Basanti Devi now 64 says that Kausani ashram changed her life for the better and inspired her to do social service and take up the issue of saving the Kosi River and working dedicatedly towards it. She received the Padma shri and the Nari Shakti award both of which were the highest honours. Devi Ji is now looked at as a champion crusader for both women’s empowerment and environmental protection.

She was initially tasked with opening Bal Baris that were active centres of recreation for children and young adults. She started opening them in remote villages that also took care of the children’s education and nutrition. Devi read an article on how the Kosi River (the most important water resource for Uttarakhand) may cease to exist in a few decades due to the rapid felling of trees by local women. These local women were from poor households who had no access to any other source of firewood so Devi ji encouraged them to not cut trees but use the dry ones for fuel and firewood. She organised them into small groups that were aimed to save the Kosi River, this helped both empower women as well as save the environment. She also protested and fought against the forest department for cutting big trees. Although the results have taken time to manifest, springs that used to dry up in the summer are now active all year. Additionally, the forest exhibits greater diversity thanks to the appearance of more broad-leaved trees including oak, rhododendron, and myrica esculenta species.

Wangari Maathai’s Life and Lessons

Wangari Muta Maathai was the late 19th and early 20th century Kenyan social, environmental and political activist who was influential in bringing about a great change in Kenya’s environmental and political advances. She was the first African woman to receive a doctorate in veterinary anatomy from the University of Nairobi where she further went on to teach that very subject. She served in the National Council of Women as an active member originally and then went on to become it’s chairman wherein she advocated the idea of planting trees and make it a grassroot effort from people so that they can sustain both their livelihoods as well as the environment.

When local Kenyan women complained of how the streams were drying up, how they had to walk long distances to collect firewood and how the food supply was less, Wangari Maathai decided to introduce the green belt movement, she motivated the local women to plant seedlings so that their need for food, firewood, rainwater harvesting were met. The green belt movement that began as part of a small initiative was now a part of something much greater. Campaigns and seminars were held around Africa about this movement as it campaigned for the need for individuals to fight and survive for their political, environmental and economic circumstances. They began demanding for more democratic space as well as fought against land grabbing and the encroachment of agriculture into forest lands.

Her work was widely recognised after she was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her conservation and protection efforts. The green belt movement became to be known around the world as it showed how grassroot level ideas from a singe person can bring the whole community together for the greater good of the society. She published books that advocated the notion further, such as The Green Belt Movement, Unbowed, The Challenge for Africa, and Replenishing the Earth. She was also appointed as the goodwill ambassador for the Congo Basin Forest Ecosystem also known as the World’s second lung after the Amazon rainforest.
